N-capable Agni-II missile successfully test-fired

India on Tuesday successfully tested the nuclear capable Agni-II missile from a defence base in Orissa.

The surface-to-surface missile with a range of over 2,000 km was test-fired from the Wheeler’s Island near Dhamara in the district of Bhadrak, some 150 km from here at 10.06am.

“It was a user trial, The aim of the test was to give the Army confidence to fire the missile on its own.

The Agni II missile, which is a part of India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, is 20 metres long.

Weighing 16 tonnes, the missile can carry a payload of around 1,000 kg and its range can also be increased to 3,000 km by reducing the pay load.

“It can be fired from both rail and road mobile launchers. It takes only 15 minutes for the missile to be readied for firing,” the sources said, adding that the Agni II-version of the Agni series of missiles was first test-fired in 1999 from the same location.

Novel vaccine approach offers hope in fight against HIV

A research team may have broken the stubborn impasse that has frustrated the invention of an effective HIV vaccine, by using an approach that bypasses the usual path followed by vaccine developers. By using gene transfer technology that produces molecules that block infection, the scientists protected monkeys from infection by a virus closely related to HIV—the simian immunodeficiency virus, or SIV—that causes AIDS in rhesus monkeys.

The App Store Gets ‘A Good Night’s Sleep’

Mobile Frontiers Ltd., a company whose mission is to enhance people’s lives through mobile technology, has recently announced “A Good Night’s Sleep,” an iPhone app that promises to be “the definitive solution to stress and insomnia.” The application is immediately available for download onto an iPhone or iPod touch running 2.2.1 software update.

What makes “A Good Night’s Sleep” special is that it uses the process of allowing users to wake up and sleep peacefully and gradually. Besides waking users up gradually, the app is also said to guarantee a relaxing end to every night by allowing them to set a series of sleep sounds or music.

“This is the ONLY application of its kind on the iTunes store; no other application utilizes our unique and exclusive process of gradually allowing users to WAKE and sleep, peacefully and gradually, the way they want!,” Mobile Frontiers Ltd. says.

“We take the health of our team very seriously and found a way to share our experiences with the general public,” Mobile Frontiers Director Simon Garratt describes the breakthrough. “No one can perform at their personal or professional best without A Good Night’s Sleep, so naturally A Good Night’s Sleep is the perfect productivity solution. This application is great for everyone, from busy professionals to stressed out teens to infants who can’t get to sleep, there is no time in a person’s life where sleep is not critical to their daily health,” he pinpoints.

“Our aim in programming this application was to ensure the broadest range of features to allow people to individualize their own relaxation experience,” Technology Development Coordinator Mehdi Akhavein adds. “A Good Night’s Sleep gives users such a varied choice of sleep AND waking modes, there is just nothing that compares to its scope and personalization ability,” he concludes.

The application is now on sale in the App Store, so, if you’re having trouble sleeping, better grab it while it’s still just two bucks.

Finally discovery has been launched

The shuttle Discovery blasted its way into orbit on Saturday through wispy clouds against blue skies on its way to deliver a bus-size laboratory to the International Space Station.

… The laboratory, the $1 billion Kibo module, is the largest and the second part of three shuttle payloads that will bring the full Kibo assembly up to the station.

It will be the largest “room” on the station, and will eventually include an exposed area, like a back porch, where some experiments will be exposed to the harsh vacuum and temperature extremes of space.
